Kitchen Cabinet Makeover - Part 1

I bet you thought we'd never get around to showing you our "new" kitchen cabinets did you? Well, here's where we are today.  Not finished, but getting there!
This is the primed state they live in today.  There is still a long way to go to completion.  We still have more cabinets to hang and trim and prime and so on!
This is what our kitchen looked like when we toured our home before buying. Would it have scared you away? Not us, we knew we could make it pretty one day.
We started by removing the faux soffit and nasty popcorn ceilings.  This made the room look so much bigger.  Of course its been over 2 years since the beginning and we've done this and that along the way.  See the floor tiling HERE and how we built a corner cabinet HERE.
For the cabinet makeover we decided to take down one cabinet at a time, finish it and then re-hang it.  We only work on the remodel on the weekends so we still have to have a functional kitchen along the way.  The first cabinet took the least amount of time to makeover.  Why?  No door to build!  Either dinner plates were not as big back in the early 80's or our dinner plates are huge because they did not fit in the cabinet with the doors closing all the way.  This cabinet will not have a new door, it will remain open.
First we had to remove the dorky looking vampire teeth design from the lower cabinet.  This meant a total dis-assembly, trimming them down and reassembling them.
Tah-dah! Much better now!  It made the cabinets look instantly more modern with clean lines.  No more dorkiness either! Ha!
Since we were leaving this cabinet open, my honey added a little strip of wood to each shelf to make it level from top to bottom for a smooth, clean look.
Next I puckied all the holes and gaps with Elmer's wood putty, let that dry really good and then sanded it smooth for a nice new start for paint.
Here it is all primed and ready for paint.  Since these cabinets were originally stained, I used Zinsser's stain blocking primer.  It's good stuff!  I will be painting the cabinets the same color we used on the laundry room cabinets.  You can see that HERE.
We are still working on the cabinets today, but we are a lot closer to completing them so I can start painting soon! YAY!  Join us next week for more cabinet makeovers!

It doesn't have to be done all at once.  It is a slow process in the works! C-ya next time!
